Lewis Hamilton teases fans he could quit Formula One for Moto GP with a cryptic tweet about his future
LEWIS HAMILTON has left fans fearing he is set to swap Formula One for Moto GP as he teases his followers with a cryptic Twitter post.
The 32-year-old hasn't extended his contract with Mercedes as he has just 15 months to run on his £30million-a-year deal.
Though he stated he wants to start talks over a new deal, as of yet nothing has been signed or made official.
He posted on Twitter: "Announcement coming tomorrow..."
For F1 fans this was the news they have been waiting for, although it has left people fearing the worst.
Along with the caption was a picture of the three-time world champion wearing a motorcycle suit, whilst holding a helmet, walking towards a motorbike in the background.
The tweet left fans in no doubt that he would be quitting F1 at the end of the season, although it is believed he will confirm his Mercedes extension until at least 2020.
One user responded by saying: "If he's quitting F1 at end of season and going to moto (sic) GP I hope Verstappen replaces him, needs a decent car/team does the lad!
While another simply said: "You're quitting F1 to ride bikes?"
One fan implored Hamilton to stay on, he said: "I’ll stop watching F1 if you retire, nobody else on the grid worth watching!"
While one person rather excitedly commented "Nascar," though that career path looks highly unlikely.
Hamilton could follow in the footsteps of legendary Brit John Surtees.
Surtees remains the only person to win world championships on both four and two wheels.
Back in April the former McLaren man declared he would love to race in a Moto GP race.
He said: "I wouldn’t miss any of the races in F1, definitely continue to do all the races. But iId like to do MotoGP.
“I’d like to ride a MotoGP race."
It is not the first time Hamilton's enthusiasm for motorbikes has set tongues wagging.
In March last year he was investigated by police after posting a selfie whilst riding a bike in New Zealand.
Hamilton currently sits tops of the F1 standings with 263 points - 28 clear of nearest rival Sebastian Vettel with six races to go.
